Mother What’ll I do Now – Formby solo chords, finger lifts and taps

The solo is found in the film I See Ice which is viewable on youtube. PeterCNixon on youtube provides an excellent annotated tutorial for this song (solo from 0.59), the only complications being it is in D and with poor sound quality… and needs slowing down to work out easily. All his instructional videos are of tremendous value – and it is good to see that he was mentioned in the Frank Skinner Formby documentary. Strummingsimon also has a good youtube video (and question/answers) that is helpful.

Chords and their split-stroke finger lifts and taps – based on C tuning positions (which will thus give different chord names in D)

C (0003) lifts to 0000

C7 (0001) lifts to 0000

G7 (0212) lifts to 0210 (ring finger)

F (2010) doesn’t seem to lift, but taps elsewhere to 2013 (ring finger)

D7 (3334) taps to 3336 (ring finger)

Solo:

all split stroke IN BOLD refers to single cycle of 8 unless noted

C (2 strums)   A7 (2 strums)   G7 (split stroke)

C (2 strums)   A7 (2 strums)   G7 (split stroke)

C         C7          F       Cdim*  (2 strums each)

G7     Cdim      G7      (2 strums each)   C

C (2 strums)   A7 (2 strums)   G7 (split stroke)

C (2 strums)   A7 (2 strums)   G7 (split stroke)

C         C7          F       Cdim  (2 strums each)

G7     Cdim      G7   (2 strums each)      C

C      C7       F      (Db7  slide to  D7)      G7   ( ALL split stroke -2 cycles each? but needs observation to determine)

C (2 strums)   A7 (2 strums)   G7 (split stroke)

C (2 strums)   A7 (2 strums)   G7 (split stroke)

C         C7          F       Cdim  (2 strums each)

G7      C     G7     Cdim  into   C…

* chord is 2323; Peter Nixon suggests 1323; I tend to play 1023 (Ab7) which is even easier but a different chord
